BlizzCon Online 2022 Has Officially Been Cancelled

So…now what?

It has not been Activision Blizzard’s year, to say the least. Despite the release of new games, the company is under a lot of scrutiny for accusations, and facing all sorts of legal dilemmas. And that raised an interesting question – what would become of BlizzCon, the company’s usually annual event that celebrates its fans?

Well, the answer is…nothing for this coming year. Per this report from Kotaku, the company’s forthcoming online event for February 2022 has officially been canned. The company noted in an official letter on its website that it has chosen to “step back and pause” the BlizzCon approach, noting that it was a “tough decision” in the face of what was happening, but still the “right one.”

“Any BlizzCon event takes every single one of us to make happen, an entire-company effort, fueled by our desire to share what we create with the community we care about so much. At this time, we feel the energy it would take to put on a show like this is best directed towards supporting our teams and progressing development of our games and experiences. “

It looks to “reimagine” what the BlizzCon experience is like, considering the negative feedback the event has gotten over the years, particularly with the introduction of a mobile Diablo game a little while back. It’s since rebounded with announcements of Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2, but these new allegations have left the show in flux.

Blizzard promises that “we’ll be back together soon,” but the real question here is how long “soon” will be, considering the show may not be on the rebound for 2023 as some are hoping. We shall see.

In the meantime, Activision Blizzard has promised announcements and updates for its games, though it didn’t have any to make at this time. Could this mean Overwatch 2 in 2022? Well, um…maybe not, but we’ll see…?
